Unlocking a Century of Subsurface Intelligence: Digital Transformation of Malaysia’s Drill Cuttings Archive

Abstract:
Drill cuttings are a large, underused geological resource with enormous potential for digital transformation. In Malaysia, MPM alone stores more than one million samples collected over nearly a century of exploration. New analytical technologies and AI-driven workflows now allow these samples to be converted into high-quality, consistent digital datasets at a fraction of the cost of new drilling. Through standardized sample preparation and a repeatable analytical workflow, reliable correlations can be made across wells and basins. These digital datasets provide powerful inputs to subsurface and rock physics models, enabling better reservoir and seal characterization and more cost-effective exploration and appraisal.
